Student Government & Organization Issues
A lawyer for student leaders on election disputes, impeachment and removal, recognition and funding denials, and speech issues at public institutions.
Overview
Student government fights look small from the outside and are anything but: a disqualification from a campus election, an impeachment engineered by a rival slate, an organization stripped of recognition or funding over a complaint nobody investigated. The school writes the rules, referees the fight, and sometimes has a preferred winner.
The governing documents are the battlefield. Election codes, constitutions, and bylaws get enforced strictly against one side and loosely against the other, and the administration’s role as the appeals body is where these fights are won or lost. At public institutions there is a constitutional layer on top: recognition, funding, and space decisions generally cannot turn on an organization’s viewpoint, and removal from an elected position implicates the process owed under due process at public institutions.
I help student leaders and organizations contest election results and disqualifications, defend impeachment and removal proceedings, and challenge recognition and funding decisions. Organizational discipline usually runs through the same machinery as an individual student conduct case, with the same traps — and where a fraternity, sorority, or team is involved, the hazing and student organization discipline framework usually controls.
